Lead is alloyed in copper materials such as brass to improve machinability. Due to the ever increasing demands in environmental and health regulations, legislation is increasingly banning the use of lead in drinking water systems.
Lead-free brass materials are known under
the brand names ECOBRASS® or CUPHIN®. In contrast to traditional free-cutting
brass (CuZn39Pb3), the machining of leadfree brass (CuZn21Si3P) poses new
challenges for existing tools. Due to a higher adhesion tendency, higher
cutting forces and tool temperatures occur. Chip breakage, which is a key
property for process reliability, also eteriorates. This results in smearing on
the rake face, chipping on the main cutting edge and spalling of the coating.
